Hanoi offers cash, other help to owners of banned vehicles

Posted at 10h18, day 05 February, 2010

The Hanoi Times -  Drivers of modified, unregistered vehicles in Hanoi will receive a minimum of VND5 million (US$271) each to buy legally permitted vehicles or get other jobs, besides many other forms of support.

Those who want to buy trucks to replace their banned vehicles will receive a further VND4 million, the city government said in a statement.

Drivers who are war veterans or disabled will be given an additional VND15 million while those from poor families, minority group or families that contributed to the war effort will get another VND10 million.

The Hanoi Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs will help the drivers learn another trade for free if they want to, and also provide free check-ups when applying for a driving license for the new vehicles.

Those giving up their banned modified vehicles will also be given priority in accessing preferential loans from the Hanoi Social Policy Bank to start their own business.

Following an order from the central government, large cities including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have imposed a partial ban on modified, unregistered vehicles.
